On Saturday, March 1st, Marian High School’s Drama Club (aka Marian Mainstagers) competed in the Annual Massachusetts High School Drama Festival Preliminary Competition with their rendition of Anatomy of Gray by Jim Leonard under the direction of Stephen Flynn, Marian’s Director of Fine Arts. The performance was held at Attleboro High School in Attleboro, MA.

Set in the American heartland in the 1880’s, Anatomy of Gray centers on a young doctor named Galen P. Gray (portrayed by Michael Costa ’14 of Milford) who is in the midst of experiencing a crisis of faith.

Inexplicably prone to fainting at the sight of blood, Galen doubts his abilities as a healer and sets out on a journey to find his true purpose in life-a quest that leads him to a small Midwestern town, also named Gray.

The townspeople quickly warm to Galen when he miraculously saves the life of one of their own, a young woman named June (played by Tyler Sparling ’15 of Framingham) who, once saved, quickly becomes his shadow. But when a mysterious disease wreaks havoc upon the community, Galen is blamed for the outbreak and quickly becomes the target of intense persecution and intolerance. A powerful story of redemption and hope, Anatomy of Gray is a medical fable for all ages illustrating the lesson that often in order to gain faith, you must first lose your way.

Awards were presented to Samantha Hansen ’17 of Franklin, Laura Cantwell ’14 of Bolton, Tyler Sparling ’15 of Framingham and Ken Paulson ’14 of Ashland for their individual performances. The Mainstagers were also recognized for Set Design and Execution, Costume Design and Execution, Props Design and Execution, and Set Decoration.

The Mainstagers next compete at the Mass High School Drama Festival Semi-Finals on Saturday, March 15 at Sharon High School, Sharon, MA at 4:00pm.
